Young Actors, Dancers Sought By Centenary Stage

Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performer’s Workshop returns this fall from Saturday, Sept. 10 through Sunday, Dec. 18.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 9. YPW is a 15-week theatre training program for performers ages 8 through 18. Each session culminates with a Festival of Shows performed by the students. New applicants must complete an interview with the director of the program, Michael Blevins, before registering.

Initial in-person interviews will took place earlier this month. Now they can be arranged through phone or Zoom. The price for the first student is $425, a second student in the family is $395, and a third is $300. YPW is a hands-on program designed to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate, and advanced performers interested in working in theatre. Throughout the fall session, students have the opportunity to learn about multiple facets of theatre arts from acting, singing and dancing, to stage management, props, and costuming. Each session concludes with a weekend Festival of Shows. Enrolled students will also have the opportunity to be cast in CSC’s 2022 mainstage Holiday Spectacular, Cinderella, although casting is not guaranteed.

Director Blevins is a Broadway, movie, and television alumnus. Some of Blevins’ previous credits include director and choreographer of the National Tours of Babes in Toyland, Aladdin, and Tom Sawyer, and most recently he directed and choreographed the NYC revival of Seesaw. Blevins also directed and choreographed his original musical Count to Ten at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. He has worked with many Tony and Academy Award winning directors and choreographers including Sir Richard Attenborough, Woody Allen, and Bob Fosse. Michael Blevins has performed with many professionals including Michael Douglas, Victor Garber, Brooke Shields, Beth Leavel, and Robert Downey Jr. He has appeared in several Broadway productions including Bring Back Birdie, Neil Simon’s Little Me, and Tony winning Tap Dance Kid in which he created the role “Winslow”. He is most widely known for his portrayal of Mark in the movie A Chorus Line. Most recently, Blevins joined artists around the world to celebrate one of America’s greatest art forms and performed selections from Bob Fosse’s DANCIN’ at City Center in the Career Transition for Dancer’s Benefit Gala.

CONSERVATORY OF DANCE

This fall, Centenary Stage Company offers two eight-week sessions of the Conservatory of Dance, the first session Aug. 29 through Oct. 21, and the second Oct. 24 through Dec. 16.

Registration is open through Aug. 28; the cost for one class per week is $130., two classes per week is $195., and three classes per week is $275 per person. Prior dance experience is required. The classes are designed to introduce dancers to professionals who are currently working as choreographers, dancers, and educators in dance and theatre at a collegiate level and to provide the community with affordable, high-quality dance classes. Classes are open to ages 14 and older.

The classes available for the first session will be Ballet I and II on Mondays from 4 to 5:20 p.m. taught by Jillian Petrie, Contemporary Hip-Hop on Mondays from 6 to 7:20 p.m. taught by Jibril Shabazz-Scott, Tap I and II on Tuesdays from 4 to 5:10 p.m. taught by Jeff Foote, Modern I and II on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:20 p.m. taught by Marueen Glennon and Jazz I and II on Fridays from 10 to 11:20 a.m. taught by Te Perez Ceccon.

The second session will feature Modern I and II on Tuesdays from 4 to 5:40 p.m. taught by Lea Antolini-Lid.
