The shelling of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, marked the beginning of the American Civil War. One hundred and sixty years later Wild West City will be highlighting the War of the States on a semi-regular basis starting in May with periodic encampments by the Hackettstown-based 27th Regiment New Jersey Volunteer reenactors.

Wild West City, located in Byram Township, is a western heritage theme park recreating 1880s life in Dodge City, Kansas. The unique western experience includes recreations of famous scenes from the Wild West, train, stagecoach and pony rides, as well as numerous educational exhibits. The park officially opens on weekends beginning May 1-2, and then daily starting with Father’s Day Weekend through Labor Day, and then again on weekends, through Columbus Day and afterwards Wild West City’s Second Annual Halloween Wild West Fest.

Wild West City will take visitors back in time a little further, in recognition of the anniversary of the American Civil War. The 27th regiment will present Wild West City guests with an interactive opportunity to gain insight into this time period.

Formed in 1862, the 27th New Jersey was the largest regiment from New Jersey and late in the year fought in the battle of Fredericksburg. The battle took place in and around in Fredericksburg, Virginia from Dec. 11 through the 15th. Unfortunately for the North, it was a losing battle with the blue army suffering major losses.

The Civil War years were tough times overall. Wild West City visitors are welcome to talk with the soldiers and other participants to learn about the hardships of war in the 1860s.

The 27th Regiment reenactors frequently take part in events throughout New Jersey and beyond. It is expected that about 20 participants will participate at Wild West City beginning with the weekend of May 15-16.

The encampment event is part of the regular admission fee which also includes over 20 different live-action shows, crowd participation, demonstrations, museum-quality exhibits and a whole lot more.

All COVID-related health precautions remain in effect until further notice, including mask wearing and a horse’s length social distancing policy. Visitors will also be required to have a temperature check upon arriving at the front gate.

Wild West City, celebrating its 64th year, is located at 50 Lackawanna Drive, in Byram Township. For more about Wild West City, visit www.wildwestcity.com. Frequent updates can be found on Wild West City’s Facebook page and on Instagram, @wildwestcity.
