WCCC Scores Big In Middle States Review

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education periodically, every eight years or so, reviews every college in the region. It is essential that colleges do well in the review; otherwise it could cost them their accreditation and financial aid – and worse – their overall reputation. Colleges typically take 18 months preparing for the review.

Warren County Community College was subject to such a review in April. And it exceeded all expectations.

In the Middle State team’s report it highlighted many accomplishments at WCCC since the last review in 2008, and perhaps most importantly the team indicated zero problem areas in a near perfect outcome. In fact, the team offered only a few minor consultative “suggestions” for improvement.

Among its conclusions, “The college has a dedicated team of faculty, staff and administration who are committed to the welfare and success of the students” and “the college has a strong and engaged Board of Trustees that cares about the institution and the success of the students.” It added, “The institution is commended for the inclusion of the entire college community in the revision of the goals, vision statement, and the development of the Strategic Plan 2020.”

“It was an outstanding effort by our faculty, staff, and administration in preparation for this extremely important review,” said Dr. Will Austin, President of WCCC, noting that the process can be stressful at times. “The process took months and everyone should be commended for the outcome – an excellent review.”

Many colleges in the reviews are normally given “requirements” or “recommendations”. WCCC had neither requirements or recommendations and only two consultative “suggestions” – in the areas of website and online course improvements – both ironically already on WCCC’s to-do list. Overall, though, it was clearly an excellent review. Middle States is scheduled to take action to make the results public in or around June 2018.

“Although the board was extremely confident in the outcome of the Middle States visit, receiving no requirements or recommendations is beyond what could have been expected,” said Phil Linfante, WCCC’s Board of Trustees Chair. “This is almost a 100% positive outcome reserved for very few of the over 1000 community colleges. It is clear that the Middle States team saw proof of what we have known for many years.  Warren County Community College, although small in number, is considered a giant in the community college national sector.”

He added, “I commend the vision and leadership of the President and his executive team, as well as the faculty and staff.  All deserve credit for this amazing outcome.  Our students are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of individuals ensuring their academic success. I also commend the President and my fellow Trustees for being change agents willing to take risks on radical strategies to increase retention and graduation rates.  The proof of this is in our graduation rate being recognized as among the top in the nation.”

Warren County Community College has become recognized nationally by trustees, presidents, and the overall higher education community as a model college. Within recent years, the national higher education community has recognized through acclaimed awards WCCC trustees, the President, faculty members, and students alike.
