WCCC Offers Unique Drone Pilot Prep Course

With more and more people using drones for professional purposes, it has now become a must for “pilots” to be certified when using drones for commercial use.

To meet this need, Warren County Community College has become the first community college in the region, to offer a training program for those wishing to be certified as drone pilots.

“For years we were seeing drones used just in war zones,” said Dr. Will Austin, President of WCCC. “Now it’s become quite common for drones to be used in many businesses. As a result, it has become essential to be certified.”

The WCCC program, through its Continuing Education Department, prepares attendees for the Part 107 Exam for Remote Pilot Certification. County and non-country residents may register for the program.

Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), is a fast improving technology that is clearly having a major impact in today’s world.  Drones are used to locate victims of natural disasters, to track down fleeing criminals, as surveillance – and bombing – in war zones, on movie sets, by photographers, and resort and real estate marketing.Drones are also being considered for the delivery of goods to customers.

Once students have completed the two-day course, they would be better prepared to pass the exam to obtain their Remote Pilot Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration. Once they have their certification, individuals would be allowed to fly a small UAV commercially.

At WCCC, the two-day certification prep session is being offered three times during the summer; June 7 and 9, July 12 and 14, and Aug. 2 and 4, starting at the College’s Phillipsburg Education Center the first day of class from 6-9 p.m., and finishing on Saturday at the NJ Drone Academy in Ringoes, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Among the areas covered in the class are: regulations and national airspace system, sectional charts, aviation weather, loading and performance, and operations. Support prep study guide and one hour of drone flying time is included.

Class cost is $479. Additional $150 Part 107 Exam fee payable to FAA.  Participants do not need to own a drone. Residents of Warren County may be eligible for a scholarship for this course through the Fred Grotenhuis Memorial Scholarship program.
