To say that Dorothy Helmken was an active and important part of the Warren County Community College scene for the past two years is an understatement. She’s not through making a difference even though she graduated in May. Helmken, now attending Drew University, was named the Alumni Trustee at the Board of Trustees’ monthly meeting in September.
“Dorothy is a welcome addition to the board,” said Dr. Phil Linfante, Chair of the Trustees. “We know that she will be a valuable member of our board.”
“Dorothy was involved in some many different aspects of the college while here that clearly she will bring a fresh perspective to the board as we focus on the future,” added Dr. Will Austin, President of the College.
Each year in the spring, the New Jersey Council of Community Colleges honors New Jersey’s top community college students and their families during a Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Day Celebration. It is no surprise to anyone at WCCC that Helmken was one of those so recognized as a member of the New Jersey All-State Academic Team, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for community colleges, and the New Jersey Education Association.
Helmken, who had been the President of WCCC’s PTK chapter, earned many awards and accolades the past two years while at WCCC, including “New Century Pathways Transfer Scholar“ and as a “Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar.” In addition, she was the Student Speaker at this year’s Commencement on May 19. At the PTK event in Trenton, Helmken was one of two featured speakers as a result of her New Century Pathways recognition.
A resident of of Mansfield Township, Helmken graduated WCCC with a major in Elementary and Secondary Education. At Drew University she is pursuing a degree to become a Math and Science teacher at the Middle School grade levels.
