Warren County Community College’s Medical Assisting program is responding to an extremely high demand from the medical community for Certified Medical Assisting professionals.
To meet the growing need, an unlimited number of students will be accepted for the Fall 2019 entry cohort for both certificate and degree programs.
“I simply cannot fill these jobs fast enough and we are inviting more students than in previous years to enroll, in order to meet that demand,” noted Marianne Van Deursen, the Vice President of Academics who oversees the program.
WCCC offers various pathways for entry into the profession. Students interested in quick entry into the workforce can choose to enroll in a 7-month non-credit, comprehensive Medical Assisting program that starts in September and completes in March 2020. The cost of this non-credit program is the same regardless of county or state residency. There is also an option to enroll in the 2-year Associate Degree in Medical program, which is on a parallel track with the nursing program, so it also offers an alternative for students who were initially preparing for the nursing program but are choosing a different entryway into the healthcare profession.
Certified Medical Assistants work in physician offices and outpatient clinics performing both administrative and clinical duties commonly performed in the outpatient/ambulatory care setting; including administering immunizations, performing EKGs, conducting initial patient intake, taking vital signs, drawing blood, performing minor laboratory procedures, assisting with examinations and procedures, managing front desk operations, billing/coding, the processing of insurance claim forms and many other duties.
WCCC’s Medical Assisting program graduates continue to realize greater than a 90% passing rate on the American Association of Medical Assistants’ CMA examination and equally high job placement rates. The CMA (AAMA) credential is recognized as the gold standard in New Jersey and WCCC is one of four CAAHEP accredited programs in New Jersey. According to Van Deursen, “this is a short-term investment for long term employment with job security in a field that continues to grow.”
