Volunteers from the Washington Borough Green Team and Warren Hills High School S.A.V.E. (Students Against Vandalizing the Earth) Club planted 120 perennial flowers, shrubs, and trees in the Downtown Pocket Park and the Shabbecong Park in celebration of Earth Day on Saturday April 21.
Funding for this project was provided through a $2,000 Sustainable Jersey capacity-building grant funded by the PSEG Foundation. The Foundation annually gives out thousands of dollars in grants, with projects ranging from a watershed management plan, rain and community gardens, a green pavilion with a living roof, an invertebrate conservation plan, wildlife habitat conservation, a plastic bag reduction campaign, an environmental resource inventory and green team capacity building.
The all-volunteer Washington Borough Green Team has also been very instrumental in the success of the town’s weekly Farmers’ Market held every Saturday from June through September by the Downtown Pocket Park. The market features fresh produce including fruits and vegetables, flowers, organic meats and other environmentally friendly items. The Farmers’ Market opens on June 2nd with a Green Fest with plenty of family-friendly “green” fun as a host of specialty vendors, kids’ activities, farmers, and live music devoted to the green theme “set up shop” in the Pocket Park in the center of Downtown Washington from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
