This year there are a total of 25 Boys and Girls in the program, only five of whom are returning runners from last season. With no seniors on either team, second-year Coach Ray Gara looked to others to assume a leadership role.
Gara has been very impressed with the leadership that boys team captains Dan Saez and Nick Hufford have taken on. “They’re doing a great job” he noted. “Both the Girls and Boys teams practice together. Dan and Nick have become real team leaders. They lead the warm-ups at each practice and have even come up with some of the workouts we do.”
The focus this season has been on becoming competitive while also building for the future. With so many runners expected back next season, the future looks bright. Ryan Vey, the fastest runner on the Boys team, is only a freshman while Jamie Kirshner, also a freshman, has shown great potential for the Girls team.
The runners, while working hard to improve, have also developed great camaraderie. They are all very supportive of one another whether it is the Girls or Boys team.
“We’re always supportive, everyone is always cheering super loudly for everyone,” noted Sylvie Errickson, a junior on the Girls team. “We are really growing together.”
When asked for his observations on how the season has gone Gara summed it up by saying, “It’s just a great vibe and everyone seems to be having fun.”
