The Jan Findlay Quartet presents Another Great Afternoon of Music in Hope

Once again the autumn air in Hope will be full of the souths of the Jan Findlay Quartet, he next concert sponsored by The Arts at St. Luke’s on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2 to 4 p.m.

Jan Findlay sings the jazz and blues classics from the Great American Songbook that were made famous by Ella, Billie, Peggy, Sarah, Nat, Frank, and other artists.

The lineup will feature Jan’s voice accompanied by Bob Himmelberger on piano, Rick Crane on standup bass, and Larry Maltz on guitar. All are highly regarded jazz musicians in the New York-New Jersey area and beyond.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is located at 346 High Street in Hope. There is ample on- and off-street parking and the building is accessible.

Jan Findlay has been singing professionally for more than forty years, having started in local clubs as a teenager with two of her peers. Jan went on to perform in the Manhattan cabaret circuit, which led to becoming The Howard Williams Jazz Orchestra’s vocalist. Jan and the band performed at The Manor, The Garage, St. Peter’s Church Midday Jazz, and Tavern on the Green. She later sang regularly with the Jay D’Amico Trio for several years in Manhattan.

Rick Crane has been booked for jazz performances in London, Sweden, Japan, Moscow, and from coast to coast in the U.S. He’s performed with the Benny Golson Quintet and been a long time member of Richie Cole’s Alto Madness Orchestra. He’s played bass with such renowned musical greats as Bucky Pizzarelli, Joanne Bracken, Jeannie Bryson, Bernard Purdie and Claudio Roditti.

Larry Maltz has been performing in venues of the New York metro area for more than 40 years. He studied with the great New Jersey jazz guitarists Bob DeVos and Harry Leahey and is well versed in the genres of pop, jazz, classical, blues and bluegrass/country. He specializes in solo acoustic arrangements of a large selection of popular music ranging from the 1920’s to present day. Among the groups he has worked, toured, or recorded with are Diane Moser’s Composer’s Big Band (jazz), Jerry Vivino (Conan O’Brien Show), Flip Peters, Sister & Brother (R&B), and Roy Crosse (steel pan jazz).

Himmelberger has been a professional pianist/teacher in the New York/New Jersey area for more than 25 years. He worked on and off with the Glenn Miller band from 1985-1990. He also performed with various jazz groups in the United States, St. Marrten, London, Argentina, and Uraguay. In the spring and summer of 1987 he had the opportunity to work with Brian Torff (George Shearings bassist at the time) in mainly east coast jazz clubs. In September of 89 he performed at Carnegie Hall with Michele Hendricks. In May of 92 he performed with the Frank Vicari quartet at the Cancun jazz festival. In the summer of 97 he recorded some of his own compositions that was recorded and played on WVIA in PA in July and the last one was aired in October of that year. In February of 98 he performed on a TV show hosted by George Graham for WVIA in which he performed these compositions.

The Arts at St. Luke’s is partially funded through a grant from the state Council on the Arts through the Cultural and Heritage Division of the Warren County Department of Land Preservation.
