Jamie and Chris Hussey of Belvidere were out before 10:00 a.m. on the Fourth of July for a morning paddle at Merrill Creek Reservoir.
The Husseys enjoy kayaking around the Reservoir – it’s quiet (no concerns about speed boats whizzing by), and it’s beautiful (they particularly “love all the nooks and crannies and lagoons”).
Chris said the length of the ride “depends on the wind,” likening it to Gilligan’s proverbial “three hour tour” although he wasn’t sure of the mileage. The foot trail around the perimeter of the Reservoir measures 5.5 mile.
Located in central Warren County, Merrill Creek Reservoir is a 650-acre artificial lake surrounded by 290 acres of protected woodland and fields.
Launching facilities are provided for recreational boating, but gasoline motors are not allowed. The Reservoir and surrounding parkland allow visitors myriad activities, including hiking along six marked trails, wildlife observation (including bald eagles, crows, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and other migratory birds) and fishing. The Reservoir, known for its brown trout fishing, is also home to walleye, yellow perch, small and largemouth bass, rainbow trout, brook trout, lake trout, among others. Although currently closed, the visitor center features natural history and cultural exhibits, as well as a sitting area with a magnificent view of the Reservoir.
