Amanda Maxwell is not only known as a great athlete at Sussex County Community College, but she is also recognized as a fine student.

Those two characteristics made Maxwell, a sophomore, SCCC’s Woman of the Year. Thus, she will represent the College at the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport  (NAGWS) Day on February 3 in South Orange. 

“Amanda is an amazing athlete who is a real leader,” said AJ Agnor, Head SCCC Softball Coach. “We can think of no better person than her for this honor. She deserves it 110 percent!” 

Maxwell, who lives in Mansfield Township and went to Warren Hills Regional High School, will be recognized at the event at Seton Hall University at an awards luncheon, and then treated to the women’s basketball game between Seton Hall and Butler University.

In addition, she will be recognized at halftime at the game on the court along with the other New Jersey college athletes that have been chosen.

Maxwell earned this recognition by being selected by the SCCC Athletic Department for her excellence in the classroom and ability on the field.

“I was not aware I was receiving this honor at all,” admitted Maxwell, expressing surprise. “The day I was told I had a meeting with the AD. Every coach in the athletic department tricked me. They were all acting like it was something bad. Honestly, I was freaking out all day until I spoke with the AD about it and when I walked out of his office, all the coaches were laughing at me and saying congratulations. After the roller coaster of emotions calmed down, I felt, and still do feel, extremely honored to receive this nomination and acknowledgement.”

Maxwell, a Liberal Arts Major at SCCC, is a star third baseman for the College softball team.  In her freshman year, she hit .478 with 11 RBI, 18 runs and 14 stolen bases. During one torrid stretch during the season, she was named the Regional Player of the Week. During that stretch she was hitting .611 and at the time was leading the team in hits, doubles, runs, stolen bases, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. 

Maxwell played softball while at Warren Hills. 

“I attended SCCC because the head coach, AJ Agnor, reached out to me, brought the school to my attention, and spoke with me about the softball program,” said Maxwell. “His enthusiasm about what he was trying to do with our program was more than enough to draw me into the school.”
 

While looking forward to the coming spring season, Maxwell is also looking beyond that. 

“After graduating from SCCC I am looking to transfer to a university in either Virginia or North Carolina,” she said. 

Maxwell said she is overwhelmed with the recognition.

“I would like to thank my family for being my backbone through everything, and I would like to thank the whole athletic department at SCCC for helping and guiding me through so much during my time here,” said Maxwell.
