The Hackettstown Business Improvement District presents its annual Tillie Walk, retracing the last steps of Tillie Smith, whose murder on the Centenary campus haunts students and residents to this day on Saturday, Oct. 22.
Tillie was an 18-year old kitchen helper at the college when she was murdered on April 9, 1886. Students claim her ghost is still present on the Hackettstown campus.
Her murder has been chronicled in a play commissioned by the college as well as books. Dennis Sullivan’s “In Defence of Her Honor” concentrates on the trial of maintenance man James Titus who was found guilty of the murder. Maryann Abromitis McFadden’s “The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife” goes more deeply into Tillie’s life.
The walk begins at the Lackland Center President’s Circle Room with costumed tour guides and continues around Hackettstown highlighting the spots that Tillie Smith visited on her last day alive. The tour will be around 1 1/2 hours and cover 1 mile total. Rain date is Sunday, Oct. 23. Tours start at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Tickets are limited, and purchased through the BID www.hackettstownbid.com.
