The Washington Borough Farmers’ Market will be celebrating the July 4th weekend with its own version of honoring our red, white and blue!
For the second year in a row, the Farmers’ Market will host its Red, White & Blue Baking Contest on Saturday July 6 during its regular hours, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Amateur bakers are invited to submit their favorite, red, white and blue desserts; cakes, pies, cupcakes! Winners will receive gift certificates to local businesses. Entry forms for the contest are available at the Farmers’ Market each week, on the Washington Business Improvement District website, www.washingtonbid.org, and at the WBID office, 21 Belvidere Avenue, Washington.
The Farmers’ Market runs 10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Saturday through the end of October and is located in downtown Washington Borough, with its anchor in the Pocket Park at 44 E. Washington Avenue (Route 57).
The Baking Contest isn’t the only special event scheduled for the Farmers’ Market in July. On the 20th, it’s a combined Mini-Kids Fest and Farmer Appreciation Day. Kids will love the specially designed children’s show presented by Gerry Gessie throughout the Farmers’ Market that day. Farmer Appreciation Day is an added dimension with lots of cool “farm stuff” for the kids to check out. There will also be a free kids activity with Dove Environmental.
But that’s not all in July. On July 13 singer-songwriter Lee Larson will be performing an array of country and pop tunes. On the 27th another acoustic performer, Louis Garzon, will take the stage. There’s always something different every week at the Farmers’ Market!
Vendors this year include several local farmers and produce vendors, Dandy Lion Acres Farm (farm fresh eggs, hanging baskets and plants, fresh produce), Greenbytes Farm (local honey, fresh and sundried herbs), Maxwell’s Farm (seasonal vegetables), Stone Row Acres Farm (fresh cut and dried flowers, succulents, handcrafted items), and Zip’s Fresh Produce (Jersey fresh produce). Steeped Tea with Jamie will offer a variety of non-GMO loose leaf teas as well as accessories. Several arts and crafts vendors are also slated for the weekly event: do good! goods (products made by people living in impoverished areas of Appalachia, including lanterns, candles, and wind chimes), GFix Drawings (pastel and pencil drawings), Buncha Bubbles (handmade vegan soaps and beauty products), Avon (personal beauty products, bug repellent, jewelry), and Glamorous Bling by I&E Paparazzi ($5 jewelry). In addition to great vendors, the Washington Farmers’ Market is known for its special events! Not only will local performers offer a variety of music styles most weeks, but contests, a kids fest, and more add to the enjoyment throughout the season. The Farmers’ Market committee is also working on some special promotional activities in partnership with the local businesses.
