Abilities of Northwest Jersey, Inc. is seeking high school students to participate in a paid internship program with local businesses.
The program, made possible by a grant from the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVRS), is available to students under an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), 504 plan, or medical documentation between the ages of 14-21 in Warren, northern Hunterdon, southern Sussex, and western Morris Counties. Students must be eligible for DVRS services and be committed to working a minimum of 10 hours per week for 150 hours.
Each internship pays $18 per hour ($2,700 total). Additionally, students will attend an orientation and soft skills training three times per week for three weeks before and after the internship that pays $100 per week ($600 total).
Registration and additional information are available by contacting 908-689-1118 or info@abilitiesnw.com.
“For more than 30 years, Abilities has established excellent relationships with numerous area employers, including grocery stores, convenience stores, auto dealerships, auto parts stores, golf clubs, restaurants, colleges, retirement communities, and more,” said Abilities CEO Cynthia B. Wildermuth. “This enables us to provide unique opportunities for student interns to gain experience and learn skills that align with their interests and career goals.”
For Emily Smith of Phillipsburg, being able to participate in the program was instrumental in helping her gain the skills she needed to get her current position at the Lopatcong Nursing Center.
“I learned to work with others and prepare food, and to help teach others,” said Smith. “In the future, I want to have a job where I can help people, earn my own money, and hopefully have my own car.”
