Jarod Ostir of Warren Hills won his fourth consecutive district wrestling title on Saturday afternoon at the District 12 tournament in Livingston. Nick Galka won his third title as a Blue Streak.
Hackettstown wrestling standouts Alex Carida and Joe Andes lived up to the encomiums they have received from the Tigers’ head coach Frank Rodgers during their stellar careers, as they captured District 9 championships on Saturday at a really tough venue, wrestling frenzied Phillipsburg.
In all, Warren Hills and Hackettstown are sending 14 wrestlers to next weekend’s regionals. They earned their shot at reaching the state championships at Atlantic City by finishing first, second, or third, in their weight divisions.
The Blue Streaks went to Livingston as the defending district champions. Despite the heroics of Ostir and Galka, they could do no better than second this time. The team title went to the Rams of Randolph by a narrow margin, 186.5 to 180.
Ostir floored Ken Newman of Livingston in 2:35 to win the 182 pound crown. Galka took longer to pin his opponent in the 220 pound final, decking Ken Pena of Cliffside Park in 5:37.
Codey O’Rourke was second at 126, representing the Blue Streaks with distinction. In the semifinal he upset defending champion Yousef Salem of North Bergen.
Blue Streaks who qualified for the regions with second place district finishes were Greg Slivka at 113, Chris Ostir at 145, Nick Hildebrandt at 160, and Durodolu Ajayi at 285. Kyle Wulff won his do-or-die third place match 11-4 over Matt Nichter of Livingston.
Carida and Andes also were dominant in their championship wins. Carida won the 145 pound title at District 9 with a 14-5 major decision over Alex Winant of Mendham. Andes only needed 22 seconds to floor Xavier Gulley of Bloomfield at 285.
Four Tigers won do-or-die third place bouts. At 160, Zeb Burke pinned Zach Andruchowitz in 59 seconds. At 170, Shawn Burke won a 4-2 decision over Terrell White of Montclair. At 182 Alejandro Castro blanked Nick Fernandez of Lyndhurst 5-0. At 220, Daniel Olson won by fall in 1:16 over Cody Cruts of host Phillipsburg in front of the vocal Stateliners’ home crowd. Phillipsburg easily won the team title. Mendham, Caldwell, and Hackettstown were second, third, and fourth respectively.
BLUE STREAKS MISS THE FINAL
In girls basketball, Delaware Valley came from behind in the final period to defeat cold shooting Warren Hills in a low scoring game on Saturday in Washington, to deny the Blue Streaks a spot in the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament championship final.
Earlier in the week, in a traditional rivalry game, Warren Hills (14-8) defeated the visiting Tigers of Hackettstown 53-30 for local pride and bragging rights. Devyn Gara led the way with 14 points and five steals. Morgan DeMayo and Nicole Mallard each had eight-point outputs. Stephanie Veneziano contributed seven points and four steals.
Lisa Kaditus led Hackettstown (9-12) with six points. Four Tigers had five-point games, Jessica Scheper, Sofia Cuello, Caitlin Nicholls, and Phoebe Nadeau.
In boys basketball the Tigers defeated High Point 57-35 on Feb. 15, behind Ed Omelia’s 12 points and Jelani Awai’s nine. However, it was probably small consolation for the third seeded Tigers after being upset and knocked out of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament on Feb. 9 in a 58-55 battle against North Hunterdon.
It will be Lions versus Lions in Saturday night’s championship final at Sparta, as North Hunterdon faces Pope John.
