A pair of Warren County athletes who earned awards and recognition for their accomplishments in high school are now sharing what they have learned to a new generation of athletes at the college level here in New Jersey.
David Sbriscia of Warren Hills has begun a new challenge as the head coach of women’s wrestling at Centenary University and former Hackettstown home run hitter Jake Hall has accepted an opportunity as the hitting and outfielding coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Hall still wants to play and will try out for a roster spot with teams in professional short-season leagues that start when the colleges’ spring season ends. He attracted national attention when he set several hitting records with County College of Morris. He was honored as an All-State outfielder while playing for the Hackettstown Tigers, not only for his batting performance, but also for his golden glove and accurate rifle arm in the outfield.
Sbriscia’s high school coaches told me he was a latecomer to wrestling in high school, but he worked hard and got up to speed very quickly, so well that he won his way to the state championships at Atlantic City. He also was a football standout with the Blue Streaks.
As the head coach at WHRHS, he led the Streaks to several conference and sectional championships. He also got a successful girls program going. One of his prize pupils was state finalist Katrina Kling. Girls wrestling has become a popular sport across New Jersey, from High Point to Cape May and everywhere in between. He is busy recruiting wrestlers as we read this.
We wish both Jake Hall and David Sbriscia the best with their new coaching careers.
Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.
