There are many Little Free Libraries around the country, but arguably the one in the most picturesque setting may be in Hackettstown. The House of the Good Shepherd, a retirement community situated along the Musconetcong River, recently dedicated a new Little Free Library on its campus.
The Little Free Library, which was donated by Sue Lanza, CEO at The House, and her daughter Elizabeth, is on the River Walk by The House and stands at a spot overlooking the Musconetcong.
The Little Free Library, part of a non-profit international organization, beckons people to Take a Book or Share a Book in an initiative that features over 100,000 generally convenient locations found in almost any conceivable area around the world.
Sue and her daughter have been avid readers and always wanted to establish a Little Free Library in a memorable place. Sue said, “Our River Walk is the perfect spot to grab a free book and enjoy the natural beauty of our campus.” Sue’s daughter readily agreed with her mother.
Sue discussed the idea with resident Marilyn Johnson, the “head librarian” in The House’s library in the main building, and she also thought it was a very nice idea.
“I often think while sitting out here (along the river) that it would be nice to have a book with me to read,” said Johnson, who worked in libraries in Roxbury and Long Valley. “It’s such a beautiful place to sit and read!”
Johnson got her “job” as librarian at The House not long after moving in. Now she’s got two libraries to keep her busy – and she’s looking forward to it!
