As October draws upon us, The Warren County Library System is celebrating Halloween – and some other holidays you may not know about!

Wonder Woman Day

Did you know that there’s an annual day to celebrate Wonder Woman? Armed with her iconic lasso of truth, Wonder Woman is a unifying force for good will and justice. While the holiday is marked later in the month, aspiring superheroes can celebrate early and meet Wonder Woman during a virtual playdate on Saturday, Oct. 3.

World Space Week

Warren County Library System will also be celebrating World Space Week from Oct. 4-10.

This United Nations-declared holiday is the largest space event on Earth. In 2019, more than 8,000 events in 96 countries were held.

This year’s celebration is all about satellites, which affect daily life in many ways. Satellites are used in communications, transportation, weather forecasting, telemedicine, and more.

Themed events throughout the week will include Friday S.T.E.A.M: Human senses in space, night sky scavenger hunt, constellation-themed crafts, a Lego challenge, and an Hour of Code challenge.

Halloween

October is the spookiest time of the year, so get ready for some chills and thrills. Events include Halloween trivia, lectures, crafts, and more. Check the library website for a full list and explore selected events below.

The October Spooktacular Reading Challenge runs all month. Just like its summer counterpart, readers in multiple age groups can earn badges for books and hours read, reviews written, and more. As part of this event, Chipper, the library mascot, will be dressing up each week in a new costume!

“Horror Bites” is a weekly competition for those 18+. Visit the library’s Facebook page on Mondays to find out the horror movie quote of the week. Comment what movie it’s from and be entered to win a prize.

“When There Were Witches,” on Oct. 8, will explore the Salem Witch Trials. This interactive gathering for teens and adults will unravel the events of 1692, analyze archival documents, and discuss the continued relevance of the events. “Made From My Own Hand” on Oct. 13 introduces participants to New Jersey’s Folk Grave Marker tradition. Beyond the marble gravestones and monuments in N.J.’s cemeteries, you may find more unique expressions of memorialization with seemingly homemade grave markers.

Other lectures and activities will cover the topics of superstitions and folk lore; Spiritualism, Halloween and theater makeup, and candy and sweets.
