Cookie cutters are a mainstay in just about every home. But only one is now considered the “World’s Greatest” and they will be highlighted as such on national TV February 15th and 22nd.
The year was 1946 and cookie cutters to that point were made mainly of tin. Plastic, a newcomer to the scene, was in its infancy stage. Hermann Maier always enjoyed the cookie making process especially during the Christmas holidays.
The family man wanted to take that enjoyment a step further and was determined to make a cookie cutter product that was innovative and easy to use for home bakers. After conducting his own research on baking, decoration, and cookie cutters, Maier chose plastic over metal. With plastic Maier realized that the baked cookie could be three dimensional with interior designs and images, and thus make for imaginative decorating. He felt that children’s imaginations would soar and cookie baking and decorating would become an even more popular past time. And so, a tradition was born with “those red plastic cookie cutters” as people would refer to them.
The HRM cookie cutters are highly touted for their superior design, deep cutting edges, and depth, something that tin cutters were never able to do.
“The HRM cookie cutters” are still as popular as ever today and have been now recognized nationally on television as “The World’s Greatest”
“Just an amazing recognition,” said Christopher Maier, Hermann’s son. “My father would be so proud to hear of this honor.” Maier took over the company after his father passed away in 1986.
In 1947, Educational Products Company sold their first set of HRM innovative plastic cookie cutters, based on Grimm’s classic fairy tale Hansel & Gretel. Later, the comic strip characters of Dagwood & Blondie were introduced. Over 130 designs would follow including Christmas and Holiday sets, as well as cutters of animals and for special occasions and everyday use. Among the designs are special editions for Christmas, Nativity set, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Spring, Easter, Animals, Nursery, Birthday, Child’s Fantasy, USA Collectors set and a Sandwich set.
These cookie cutters, which in addition to decorating cookies, can be used as ornaments or for art projects, are especially treasured by families, often passed on from one generation to another. Its iconic Santa face cutter is a particular favorite.
