The 232nd anniversary of the “greatest document ever created” is being marked by the Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders, who proclaimed September 17-23 as Constitution Week.
On September 17, 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the final time in Philadelphia to sign the document they had written, giving birth to the United States government that we know today.
The Daughters of the American Revolution started celebrating Constitution Week in 1950s and it was later signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jan Hunold, Regent of the DAR’s General William Maxwell Chapter, told the freeholders as she accepted their proclamation.
Freeholder Director Jason J. Sarnoski thanked the DAR for their efforts, noting, “They do a great job of recognizing our country and all of our freedoms, and the greatest document ever created, the Constitution.”
Freeholder James R. Kern, III said it was “truly fitting” to remember the Constitution each year, as it is the basis of the public meetings, public participation and democratically elected representatives that mark our form of government. “It’s just important to honor our roots, for what is the greatest form of government and the greatest country in the world, to honor this founding document,” Kern added.
Hunold noted that the Maxwell Chapter currently has a display in the Washington Borough Library on the history of the United States Constitution and on the signers from New Jersey, which she urged everyone to visit.
