Nine former Tigers’ athletes were inducted into the Hackettstown High School Sports Hall of Fame last weekend. Among them were four who were presented Warren County Athlete of the Year honors over 20 years ago by the Star-Gazette.
Christina Fowler was a two-time winner, in 1996 and 98 and remains the school’s all-time scoring leader in girls basketball to this day. Also, Brian Dixon (1987), Mike Morgan (1993) and Becky Snover (1993) were inducted. Dan Hirshberg, the sports editor of the local paper at the time, started the Athlete of the Year tradition in 1983. The honored athletes were chosen by a vote of the county’s athletic directors.
Also, Bill Burke (class of 1945), Penny Fales (class of 1977), Bert Francks (class of 1971), Chris O’Connor (class of 1987) and Ed Wehmeyer (class of 1972) were presented Hall of Fame honors. Congratulations to them all.
This is the second class of the Hall, which was established last fall.
WARREN HILLS STREAKING
The Warren Hills Blue Streaks won their third straight football game on Saturday, at Scotch Plains/Fanwood, pulling away by a 42-14 score after trailing 14-0 at the end of the first period.
After starting out 0-3, the Blue Streaks now stand at 3-3, going into a big Friday night game at 6-0 Somerville.
Quarterback Garret Koch scored a touchdown on the ground and threw for one via air, a 10-yard connection with Bryce Katstra, which gave Warren Hills the lead after Sean Morris had tied the score with a 40-yard gallop.
Never looking back and taking no prisoners, Warren Hills sealed the deal with a four-yard rushing touchdown by Geir Nemeth and a 40-yard interception return to the house by Hayden Van Solkema in the fourth period.
TIGERS STUNG BY HORNETS
The Hackettstown Tigers are 2-4 and licking their wounds, after losing a 54-41 shootout to the visiting Hanover Park Hornets on Friday evening.
Offense was not the problem, as Zack Jastrzebski ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns and Matt Castro rambled for a team-high 129 yards and another touchdown.
Also contributing to the points parade were Jared Salazar with 64 yards and a touchdown and Tim Ervey with 47 yards and a touchdown.
Zeb Burke (14 tackles) and Castro (12 stops) shined on defense, but the Tigers gave up too many big plays to get a win.
Dover, also nicknamed the Tigers, comes to Hackettstown for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday evening.
