DASACC Announces Dog Walk to Celebrate the Bond Between Survivors of Violence and Their Pets

Connections are essential, and at DASACC, we believe in the power of accompaniment ā€“ walking alongside survivors of violence as they navigate their journey toward healing and safety. The greatest service we offer is providing this steadfast support. Just as we strive to be unwavering companions for survivors, we recognize that pets play a similar role in all our lives, offering unconditional love and companionship. Our upcoming event celebrates this important bond and aims to highlight those affected by abuse.

Why a DASACC Dog Walk?

Research shows abusers often have a pattern of violence towards all members of the household ā€“ including children and pets. When domestic violence survivors seek to escape violence, many are faced with the challenge of finding shelter for themselves, their children, and their pets. Many shelters do not have the means to house companion animals. Sadly, many survivors stay with an abuser for fear that the abuse of their animals will escalate if they are left behind or that threats to their animals will be used to compel them to go back.

DASACC is one of only a few programs in the nation that has a kennel and actively invests in the well-being of pets that accompany survivors. We acknowledge the importance of pets in the lives of survivors. This commitment ensures that survivors do not have to make the choice between their safety and their pets.

Important Statistics

  1. 71% of women in domestic violence shelters report their abusers threatened, injured, or killed a pet (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence).
  2. Nearly half of victims stay with an abuser rather than leave their pet behind (Carlisle-Frank, Frank, & Nielsen, 2004. Pets as Pawns).
  3. 52% of survivors in shelters leave their pets with the abuser (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence).
  4. As many as 25% of survivors will return because the abuser is using their pet as a means to get the person back (ASPCA).

At DASACC’s Dog Walk, we are committed to creating a space where empathy, education, and engagement intersect. Our goal is to raise awareness about the effects of domestic violence on everyone and to foster a community that participates in efforts to create change
