Circular Barn Gone But Not Forgotten

Round Barn on Pequest Road circa 2004. Photo by Charlie Fineran.

Charlie Fineran’s photo of the week is a real barn stormer!

The phrase ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ is appropriate for this week’s photo!  This Circular Barn had always caught my eye and interest on my travels along Pequest Road.

‘What an interesting concept for a barn!’  ‘Wonder if there were any advantages with this design?’  Questions such as these, ultimately, drew me off the road, camera in hand for an up close, photo tour, on a November day way back in 2004.  Looking back, I am thankful for my visit.

According to the New Jersey Round Barn List by Dale Travis, dated 6-20-2016, this barn was built by the Pfaff Family. Abandoned and in poor shape, it finally collapsed on October 28, 2008, from a heavy snow.

If I had not stopped, we might be saying, ‘Gone and Forgotten’!  Or, worst-case scenario, we may have totally forgotten that it was ever there!

Find below a link to the full photo tour of this barn. I hope it will get your minds thinking and wondering about this barn’s operations.  I, for one, wonder why there were not more circular barns.  I am going to have to inquire with some of my farmer friends, for their thoughts.  Your tour begins on the first floor where cows would obviously be in a circle, and then we go upstairs. I was impressed by the woodwork, which was really quite nice, along the inside of the roof.
