Sunrise on the FIRST DAY OF WINTER!!! Charlie Fineran’s Photo of the Week shows the sun’s most southern position on the horizon!
This photo was taken in Allamuchy Township at corner of Kestrel Lane looking down Youngs Island Road. The first day of Winter is Dec. 21st and this occurred last Friday. I wanted to show a current photo but the weather did not cooperated, heavy rain!! This photo is from Dec. 20th 2013, note the snow, this was a winter many people would like to forget!!
From my perspective, Dec. 21st always means “GOOD NEWS!!!” Think of it, every day, from now until June 21st the days will begin to get longer and longer!!! For some of you, there may be some, “BAD NEWS!!!” Winter has just officially begun!!!
Any cold or snow before today, doesn’t count!!!!
The Winter Solstice is when the sun reaches its furthest point south of the equator, shortest daylight hours!! Each day gets a little longer as the sun begins its journey back North and on March 21st the sun crosses the equator, Vernal Equinox, which signifies the first day of Spring and also means equal hours of daylight and darkness along the equator!! June 21st the sun reaches its furthest point North of the equator, Summer Solstice, meaning the first day of Summer and the longest daylight hours! Note: (that is a day of depression for me, realizing the days are now getting shorter again!!) On September 22nd the sun again crosses over the equator signifying the first day of Autumn and once again equal daylight and darkness!!
Over the years, I have tried to capture and compare the sun’s journey along the horizon! It is fascinating to see just how far the sun travels on any given horizon! I also do this with sunsets!! I have many more sunset photos than sunrise, only because of convenient locations to sites facing West in the area where I live!! This project does require a little patience to complete and some co-operation with the weather!! This has been a lot of fun HOWEVER, weather can sometimes through a monkey wrench into one’s plans, when that happens – wait till next year!!

The first photo shows sunrise from my home, the next three photos, two are the same location and one is the end of my street at Youngs Island Rd., notice the snow!! That year is a Winter many would like to forget!!
The next four photos are from Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange, NJ This site gives the viewer the BEST SIGHT of the New York City Skyline!! It covers from the George Washington Bridge south to the Verrazano Bridge. This site gives a great backdrop to trace the sun’s movement throughout the year!!
Our last site is Trenton Blvd., Sea Girt, NJ These photos were taken one day after the earlier snowy Allamuchy pictures!! NO SNOW along the coast, which is not an unusual situation for this region. The photo of the ship was included because there was beach replenishment taking place and I liked the effect of the early sun rays on the ship!!
The last five photos were taken 12-21-2016 I was even lucky to have a small group of deer visit the site with me. Unfortunately, last Friday, it was raining, NO SUNRISE PHOTOS!!
Hope you enjoy and (HINT) if you have a large panorama facing east near you maybe you could initiate your own photo survey of the sun and its travels between seasons!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS – HAPPY NEW YEAR & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
