Charlie’s Pic Of Week Is Jammin’ With Ice

Charlie Fineran’s Photo of the Week is all “jammed up!”

During cold spells, we are treated to the spectacle of ice jams on the Delaware River.  Kittatinny Point, located in the Delaware Water Gap on the Jersey side is a great place for a visit to view this impressive scene.

This week’s photo was almost a year ago, on January 20th, 2018.  There were many people enjoying this sight, the parking lot was almost full!!  I chose, this photo for several reasons.  First, to inform you about the possibilities of an interesting Family trip, observing Mother Nature turning the River into an impressive chaotic scene, huge chunks of ice pushed atop one another.  Standing on the shoreline, you are looking over this vast area covered with ice AND you can hear, deep crunching and grinding sounds, as the River constantly pushes and shoves the ice.

Walking along the shoreline there are plenty of opportunities to watch and see other areas where the ice is not jammed solid, there you can watch, the ice move up out of the water or slip back into the dark water and during this shifting, observe the dark water welling up or sinking back into the River with the ice!!

The second reason I picked this photo is as a SAFETY REMINDER!!  During my visit, I observed several people actually on the ice out over the River!!  REMEMBER, this is not like walking on a frozen pond, this is a large moving River AND this ice was jammed together and is constantly under stress, just waiting for that moment of tension release!!  The gentleman in the photo, like myself, wanted some up close up photos, BUT, did not want to leave the safety of the beach area!!  Please STAY OFF THE ICE!!  My third reason, is to show you an interesting device in action and maybe give you an idea for a a new way to get some great photos!!

Our Photo of the Week was taken from Kittatinny Point in the Delaware Water Gap, which is within the vast Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area or DWGNRA.  Our photo of the Week depicts just one of many exciting and fun Family recreational activities within this vast Park.  Please visit my Flickr site for photos showing many other great activities within the Park!  Hope these photos give you some ideas, and who knows, maybe you will be doing one of these activities throughout this upcoming New Year!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! – Charlie Fineran
