Charlie Fineran’s Photo of the Week showcases the view from the Appalachian Trail just North of Millbrook Rd. If you park on Millbrook Road, this is probably the shortest walk to a panoramic view site along the AT in Warren County. Keep heading North a short distance and you will cross into Sussex County, keep hiking until the next road and you will be at the end of Blue Mountain Lakes Rd. where it meets Skyline Drive going into Crater Lake.
Our Appalachian Trail – Warren County Panoramas photo tour visits locations between Raccoon Ridge and sites just North of Millbrook Road, all located atop the Kittatinny Ridge.
Appalachian National Scenic Trail spans 14 States in its 2,200 mile journey from Georgia to Maine. New Jersey has 72.2 miles making it the second longest trail in New Jersey behind the Delaware and Raritan Canal Trail. More than half the trail in New Jersey is along the top of Kittatinny Ridge in the NW corner of the State. The AT enters New Jersey from the South on a pedestrian walkway along the Interstate 80 Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge over the Delaware River. (No charge for hikers yet!) The trail ascends through Worthington State Forest, passing Sunfish Pond and then continues on until you arrive at Raccoon Ridge – This is where your Panorama View-sheds begin!!! Raccoon Ridge is a famous bird watching hawk migration site. You look East, it’s all Jersey, look West, it’s all Pennsy and look down, it’s the Delaware River!! From Raccoon Ridge North to the area where the Photo of the Week was taken, just North of Millbrook Road, just keep your cameras ready!!
