Centenary University Associate Professor of Counseling and Director of the Graduate Counseling Program Keith Morgan received the 2022 book award from the Society for Social Work and Research.
Morgen and Tina Maschi, of Fordham University, wrote “ Aging Behind Prison Walls: Studies in Trauma and Resilience (Columbia University Press, 2020) . The award was presented at the organization’s annual conference in Washington, D.C., last month. In announcing the selection, the society cited the authors’ “outstanding scholarly contributions that advance social work knowledge.”
The book offers concrete proposals for community and national policies to address the issue of incarcerated older adults. In the United States there are more than 200,000 older than age 50 in prisons. Projections have older adults accounting for one-third of the prison population by 2030.
Morgen and Maschi explore the coping strategies used by incarcerated aging adults to create meaning in their lives.
