“RENT,” the Broadway musical based on Puccini’s “La Bohème,” runs from Thursday, July 7, through Sunday, July 17.
The musical follows the ups and downs of a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village. The group’s dreams, losses, and love stories weave through the narration to paint a portrait of the gritty bohemian world of New York City in the late 1980s, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
“The Marvelous Wonderettes runs Thursday, July 28, through Sunday, Aug. 7. In this play, Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy attend the Springfield High School class of 1958 Super Senior Prom, and navigate relationships, growing up, and following their dreams.
In between these two productions, Destination Motown, featuring the Sensational Soul Cruisers will perform on Saturday, July 23, at 8 p.m. They are an 11-man horn group fronted by four vocalists who pay homage and tribute to songs of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s Old School, RnB, Motown and Disco. Tickets are $35 for orchestra seating and $30 for balcony seating.

Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performers Workshop will present their Spring Festival of Shows from May 27 through June 5 with productions of “The Robber Bridegroom” and “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?”
Performances will be in the Little Theatre in the Seay Building on the Centenary campus. Tickets for are $12.50 for adults and $10 for children under 12.
“The Robber Bridegroom” is set in 18th Century Mississippi and follows Jamie Lockhart, a robber of the woods, as he courts Rosamund, the only daughter of the richest planter in the country. The proceedings go awry, however, thanks to a case of double-mistaken identity.
Focusing on eight children during their Catholic elementary and high school education in the 1950s, “Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?” captures the antics of youthful growing pains and the trying moments of adolescence.

The Young Performers Workshop is a 15-week intensive musical theatre program for children ages 8 to 18. This is a hands-on program designed to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate, and advanced performers interested in working in theatre.

The summer 2022 session of the Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performers Workshop returns will run from July 11 through Aug. 14.
The deadline to apply for the 15-week theatre training program is July 8. Performers ages 8 to 18 will take classes in dance, acting, singing, stage combat, technical theatre, and more. Each session culminates with a student Festival of Shows performed. New applicants must complete an interview with the director of the program, Michael Blevins, before registering. The price for the first student in a family is $795 and a second student is $695. Blevins has Broadway, movie and television credits. He was director and choreographer of the National Tours of “Babes in Toyland,” “Aladdin,” and “Tom Sawyer,” and most recently he directed and choreographed the NYC revival of “Seesaw.” Blevins also directed and choreographed his original musical Count to Ten at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. He has worked with many Tony and Academy Award winning directors and choreographers including Sir Richard Attenborough, Woody Allen, and Bob Fosse and has performed with many professionals including Michael Douglas, Victor Garber, Brooke Shields, Beth Leavel, and Robert Downey Jr. He has appeared in several Broadway productions including “Bring Back Birdie,” “Neil Simon’s Little Me,” and the Tony-winning “Tap Dance Kid” in which he created the role “Winslow.” He is most widely known for his portrayal of Mark in the movie A Chorus Line. Most recently, Blevins joined artists around the world to celebrate one of America’s greatest art forms and performed selections from Bob Fosse’s “DANCIN’” at City Center in the Career Transition for Dancer’s Benefit Gala.
