For those inclined to start their holiday gift-gathering early, The House of The Good Shepherd held a Pre-Christmas Sale, organized by the Independent Living Residents Council and other House residents. Running October 25 – 28, shoppers found spectacular deals on a mix of used and new items, including books, clothes, CDs, baked goods, pottery, decorations, puzzles, kitchenware and even a delicate, hand-made, crocheted throw.
The Pre-Christmas Sale is a 15 year tradition at The House. Jean Burnside, current secretary for the Independent Living Residents Council, has headed the sale for two years, however there are several volunteers that assist in varied ways, from seeking donations to set-up. Most donations come from residents and staff at The House. Burnside said there were many more donations this year than last.

Regarding their fundraising efforts, the Independent Living Residents Council donates $50 to the Shepherd’s Fund whenever an Independent Living Resident dies, according to Ms. Burnside. The Shepherd’s Fund was founded many years ago by The House of The Good Shepherd’s Board of Trustees as a way to provide financial assistance to residents whose resources have depleted over time. The House of The Good Shepherd is committed to providing care and services to their residents without regard to a person’s ability to pay.
