Throwback Thursday: Youngest Driver Races Oldest Crate

Cathy is taking the week off, so we thought we would throw it back to July 2018 for some summer thoughts during this cold, snowy week.

Cathy Miller’s People Picture of the Week features a young participant in Washington Celebrates America’s Orange Crate Derby on the Fourth of July. Elijah (Eli) Sypniewski, from Washington, is only 7 years old, but he made his inaugural run in an antique cart and earned a trophy for 7th place. He was also awarded a trophy for the oldest cart. The cart, constructed of wooden slats with wooden axles, was built in the 1950s by a fellow from the Bangor, PA area. Ralph Banghart, who was WCA’s Orange Crate Derby organizer for over 30 years, beginning in 1977, acquired this beauty around 3-4 years ago. As one of several carts sponsored by Stew’s Auto Body, business owner Todd Unangst Sr. keeps a watchful eye on the vehicles and the young racers, making sure they’re safe and having fun.

Cathy Miller, an award-winning photographer who has been capturing the faces of Warren County for many years, has had her work appear in numerous publications, local, statewide, and beyond.
