Belvidere and Warren Hills off to a Good Start

By Andy Loigu

Belvidere (3-1) and Warren Hills (2-2) have gotten off to a good start in this fall’s football season, putting them in contention to qualify for the post-season championship playoffs.

BHS head coach Jordon Schreffler is familiar with the playoffs in New Jersey, having quarterbacked Big Red to the sectional final at Rutgers Stadium in 2007 as a senior. He knows from personal experience what it takes to get there.

Upon his graduation from Belvy, he played college football at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. He is proficient at analyzing film in order to prepare his players to be at their best come gametime. For several decades, BHS has been respected as one of the top small school football teams in the Garden State.

Big Red came into the season with several experienced seniors leading the way at summer practice and has benefitted from seeing juniors Geoffrey Young and Elijah White step up their level of play and contribute to wins over North Plainfield (35-14), Manville (21-0) and Dunellen (34-0) this September.

Young had a defensive sack against the North Plainfield Canucks. Quarterback Kyle Blew threw for 52 yards, running back Julian Dorfman carried the ball for 78 yards and Mason Chamberlain hauled in 17 receiving yards and made seven tackles on defense.

Against the Manville Mustangs, Blew threw for 92 yards, Dorfman rushed for 61 yards, White gained 55 receiving yards and Young got another sack.Braden Stefan made 12 tackles.

Against the Dunellen Destroyers, Blew gained 124  passing yards through the friendly skies, while Jamael Davis had 18 yards on the ground and 12 yards catching passes.

Big Red visits nearby rival North Warren for a 3 p.m. start on October 19 in Blairstown and hosts the Middlesex Blue Jays for a 1:30 p.m. start on October 26. Belvidere is 2-0 in the Big Central Conference.

Meanwhile, the Warren Hills Blue Streaks enjoyed a 56-0 romp over visiting Morris Hills, but suffered a 35-7 loss to the always tough and well coached West Morris Wolfpack.

Quarterback John Korczukowski has been as hard to stop as he is to spell. He had Dylan Duerring taking handoffs and gaining 202 yards behind a fierce offensive line against Morris Hills. Mekhi Garrett caught 24 passing yards.

The Streaks look forward to their annual rivalry battle with the Hackettstown Tigers, scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Warren Hills Stadium on October 25.

Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.
