Baseball sports chatter, hot start

By Andy Loigu

You can’t win them all, if you don’t win the first one.

As of this writing, the Warren Hills Blue Streaks baseball team has won their first five.

The streak began with a 5-0 win at North Plainfield and continued at home with a 7-0 win over Manville, a 6-2 win over Belvidere, and a 12-3 win over Bound Brook.

Back on the road on April 11, coach Aaron Feldman’s Blue Streaks downed the South Hunterdon Blue Eagles 7-5.

On the bump, pitcher Daniel Willis struck out six South Hunterson hitters, and got offensive support from a deep lineup.

Evan Mathew scored two runs, one of them on a home run blast. Jacob Valverde stroked two base hits, and Matt Garabed drove in a run.

A couple of challenging opponents await Warren Hills on the upcoming slate of games, both games to be played at home. Mighty Phillipsburg comes calling on April 15 (4 p.m. start) and always well coached and strong on fundamentals Hackettstown visits on April 21, a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Hackettstown had the best baseball start I can remember around these parts, back in 2011, when the Tigers won their first 15 games. It wasn’t until the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament against a talented Hunterdon Central team, that the Tigers were dealt their first loss.

OMAHA, OMAHA

Warren County baseball fans were all excited last September when former Blue Streaks’ pitcher Anthony Veneziano was called up to the majors by the Kansas City Royals. It would have been nice to see him pitch this weekend at Citi Field against the New York Mets.

That trip to New York will have to wait, because Veneziano is back in Triple-A now, with the Omaha Storm Chasers, where he is in the starting rotation.

I remember Hackettstown and Centenary University’s Cole Kimball, when he was disappointed at starting the 2011 season at Triple-A Syracuse. After giving up no runs in 12 straight pitching appearances, he got the call from the Washington Nationals, to “the show,” on May 14.

Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.
