Abilities seeks local partners for internship program opportunities

– Abilities of Northwest Jersey, Inc. is looking for business partners in Warren, Hunterdon, Sussex, and Morris Counties to provide internship opportunities for area high school students.

Through a “2023 Paid Internship, Pre-Employment Transition Services” grant from the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, the students will be paid by Abilities and also receive workers compensation insurance through Abilities. There is no cost for participating businesses.

“This grant is designed to help students ages 14-21 experience real work situations and gain employment skills that will benefit them in the future. We’re looking for local employers who are willing to provide training and mentoring for the students for a minimum of 10 hours per week,” said Abilities CEO Cynthia B. Wildermuth.

Local businesses that are interested in employing one of the students can contact Barb White, Abilities’ Employment Services Manager, at 908-689-7460 or bwhite@abilitiesnw.com.

Participating students will receive $18 per hour and work a total of 150 hours for the internship. For businesses, the internships offer significant flexibility. Hours can be spread out throughout the summer, completed during the school year, after school, or on weekends, based on the student’s availability and business needs.

All students are required to provide working papers as required for their age. They must be able to work independently at the job site, under the employer’s supervision, and they must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Abilities will provide the students and the local businesses with weekly assistance and consultation and provide the businesses with a contact number for an assigned job coach/skills trainer who will be available as needed if there are questions or concerns.
