The photo of the week is the view from the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey (UACNJ) clubhouse at Jenny Jump State Forest, looking East over the Pequest Valley with its Great Meadows. The distant left of the viewshed (off the photo) overlooks the new homes along the Mallard Drive roadway in Panther Valley, as well as Allamuchy. The large distant fields are part of the Great Meadows of Independence and Liberty Townships. Keep in mind, 20,000 years ago, there was three thousand feet of glacier atop where this photo was taken from!! Those Great Meadows (rich black soil) were once a large lake created by the melting glaciers!!
Story behind the Photo of the Week. The past several weeks everyone has been talking about and celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Man’s Landing on the Moon. I am always looking for interesting places and activities “INSIDE WARREN” to share with you!! My idea: Let me revisit the UACNJ, which sits atop the ridge at Jenny Jump State Forest!! The United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey is a “consortium” of amateur astronomy clubs from the tri-state area that use the Jenny Jump Observatory and Education Center to share resources, promote activities, and educate the public about astronomy.
The entrance road was blocked to vehicles by a locked gate. A sign read, “Open to Public – April-October – Saturday 8PM-10:30PM.” I then proceeded to Jenny Jump State Forest’s Headquarters located just down street. (NOTE: There is quite a nice display of Wildlife and pamphlets at the headquarters.) I picked up some brochures and pamphlets to take back to Allamuchy Township’s Open Space Information Tables at Town Hall!! (HINT: Visit Allamuchy Town Hall’s display table for a lot of information on places to visit!)
