It was disco fever at the 12th annual Arc of Warren County Prom for The Arc’s community and their guests, which recently took place at Hawk Pointe Golf Club.
Over 100 guests enjoyed the “That ‘70s Prom: A Dressy Disco”-themed dance, which was organized by a committee made up of individuals who use The Arc’s services. The committee oversaw event planning with Carinne Buzzuto, the self-advocacy advisory and training coordinator at The Arc. The fun-filled evening consisted of dinner, games, dancing and naming of Prom King and Queen.
The annual party was developed 12 years ago after a resident communicated to a support staff employee, Vickey Heymach, that she regretted not going to her own high school prom. Heymach then spearheaded the initiative that first year, and has become tradition since.
“The prom is a much-anticipated experience for our guests and committee members,” says Buzzuto. “Those who are involved in the process take ownership and pride in the planning that goes into this social occasion. Discussions and decisions about next year’s celebration are already in the works.”
The Arc is a national organization that has served individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their family members since 1950. Programs include residential group homes and supervised apartments, day services, community-based supports, advocacy services, recreation and summer camp, Special Olympics training, early intervention and a wide variety of additional social services.
