The Blairstown Farmers’ Market kicks off it’s 15th season on Saturday, June 4.
All food at the market is sourced within a 25-mile radius. The market is hosted by . the Foodshed Alliance Farmers’ Access Network and sponsored by Atlantic Health/Newton Medical Center.
The Market, located on Route 521 across from the Blairstown Elementary School next to the Blairstown Firehouse, will run every Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., from June 4 to October 29 and feature a variety of local farmers, artisans, musicians and children’s activities. There is plenty of free parking in the elementary school lot.
Special market events will take place throughout the season and will include live music and children’s activities. The Market fulfills a major role in the Foodshed Alliance Farmers’ Access Network’s mission to develop a local food system, where eating locally and seasonally is the first choice.
Executive Director Kendrya Close explains, “We want to provide all residents in our area with a centralized location to obtain fresh, locally grown and produced food.” She added the local market provides the added benefit of allowing shoppers to meet their neighbors while helping to support the local farming community.
The market accepts EBT/SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) benefits.Simply bring your EBT card to the Alliance’s table with the sign that says “SNAP/EBT accepted here.” The Market Manager will swipe your card for the amount that you want and give you Marke tokens that can be used to buy groceries from stands at the market In addition, residents using their SNAP benefits card will get an added benefit–up to $20 in free Double Good Food Bucks a day to spend on produce. This benefit is made possible thanks to a grant from the Garden State Good Food Program, administered by City Green, a nonprofit working to improve access to fresh, locally grown foods in underserved communities.
